The Vision Takes Shape

Formation of the Pilot Boat Company

Pilot Woody King aligned himself with a group of like-minded Marine Pilots and boat services professionals. Together, they established the Pilot Boat Company, laying the foundation for what would become Jamaica's most trusted maritime service provider.

"In his mind, had a tugboat been there, it could have either used its fire-fighting capabilities or assisted to push the ship from the dock to minimize environmental damage."

The revolutionary spirit of King's persona, combined with his somewhat unconventional approach, didn't attract all the traditional and straight-laced pilots. However, those who shared his vision understood the potential impact of their mission.

The Catalytic Moment

1992 Montego Bay Tanker Fire Incident

The horrific 1992 incident in Montego Bay involving a tanker on fire became the defining moment. Pilot King watched in horror as the environmental disaster unfolded, realizing that proper tugboat services could have prevented or minimized the catastrophe.

This pivotal moment sparked immediate action. King quickly presented his tugboat service concept to the group of pilots. The majority agreed with his assessment and vision for comprehensive maritime support services.

Sourcing the First Tugboat

After thorough investigation, a suitable tugboat was sourced in the Bahamas. The team began the process of forming the company, facing the critical hurdle of obtaining permission from the Port Authority.
